Society
Publications
As part of its new effort to better support R.O.T.C. programs in the
nation, Scabbard and Blade has initiated a publishing program. The
measures include revival of The Scabbard and Blade Journal, the
Society’s member magazine, and the launching of two new book series.
Active members and alumni of Scabbard and Blade are being asked to
participate in the various publications of the Society, through personal
contributions and referrals to others who might contribute.
The program also involves a publications board, currently including Dr.
Patricia Shields, editor of the academic journal Armed Forces &
Society; Dr. Arthur Coumbe, historian for the U.S. Army Cadet
Command, and Lt. Col.
Keith Donahoe. Individuals interested
in becoming involved with the editorial board should contact the
national office.
Contributions or queries about the Society’s publication effort should
be directed to
pubs@ScabbardAndBlade.org.
The Scabbard and Blade Journal
Publication
of the Society’s traditional magazine is being resumed after a number of
years of inactivity. The Scabbard and Blade Journal was initially
issued as a small-format quarterly beginning in October 1913 as The
Scabbard and Blade. It later evolved into a magazine format and was
continually published as the Journal through the early 1980s,
after which it appeared only infrequently.
The new Journal will be published in a full-color magazine format
and will be sent to all active members, members of the Society’s alumni
association, and to R.O.T.C. departments throughout the nation. In
addition to news of the active companies, the publication will carry
articles by and about military leaders and Society alumni.
Alumni who join the association will be encouraged to submit to an
“Alumni Notes” section.
The Scabbard and Blade “They
Served” Book Series
The
first title in a new book series devoted to reporting the service
contributions of alumni of Scabbard and Blade is off the press. The
Life and Times of Edwin E. Glover: Story of a Patriot, is a brief
presentation of both the military and civilian experiences of one of the
major promoters of Scabbard and Blade.
It is expected the new series will provide an avenue to relate the
personal experiences of Scabbard and Blade alumni and other military
veterans involved in the nation’s conflicts.
This title may now be
ordered
online through New Forums Press, the Society's partner for the project.
All proceeds from sales go to Scabbard and Blade projects.
The Scabbard and Blade “Future
U.S. Officer” Book Series
A
second book series is devoted to in-depth examinations of and
commentaries about pre-commissioning training of the
U.S. military. Planned as a venue for scholarly writers interested in
topics such as the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and military
schools, the titles in this series will take the form of histories, but
also serious studies of training programs and methods.
The first title in the series, History of the U.S. Army Cadet
Command: Second Ten Years, 1996-2006, was initially published by the
U.S. Army Center for Military History, and was out of print until
republished by Scabbard and Blade. Other planned titles for the series
include a history of Junior R.O.T.C. programs and a history of Scabbard
and Blade itself.
This title may now be
ordered online
through New Forums Press. All proceeds from sales go to Scabbard and
Blade projects.
