- Senior (Traditional) Scabbard and Blade -
Traditionally, Scabbard and Blade has functioned as a military honor society for ROTC training programs of all services at American colleges and universities since 1905 when it was established at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Membership is by invitation and is limited to the top 20 percent of cadets and midshipmen according to the local unit’s class order of merit list (see “Joining”).
The primary thrusts of Scabbard & Blade include promoting scholarship in the military departments and throughout the Society, the development of and identification with the American profession of arms, and a special understanding of joint missions, organizations and doctrines. Additionally, members are expected to seek to develop positive leadership abilities within the Reserve Officer Training Corps departments and later as junior officers of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps active and reserve components. Programs and activities by the companies of the Society should be designed with this thrust in mind.
Scabbard and Blade is also fraternal, in that members seek to develop a lifelong commitment to the principals of the Five Stars and continued fellowship with other members after graduation and commissioning and throughout life (see “Alumni Outreach”).
