Maj. Gen. (Ret.) H.
Douglas Robertson was born in Waynesville, NC on December 1, 1943. He
received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and an ROTC
Commission from Clemson University in 1966. He earned a Master's Degree
in transportation engineering from the University of South Carolina and
later obtained his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of
Maryland.
General Robertson is
a graduate of the Infantry Officer's basic and advanced courses. He is
also a graduate of the Military Advisor Course, the Defense Language
Institute, the Command and General Staff College, the Engineer Branch
Qualification Course, and the
Army
War
College.
He began his Army
career on active duty in 1966 serving in a variety of positions. In 1967
he served in the 2/15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized) in
Germany as the Heavy Mortar Platoon Leader, Commander of a Mechanized
Infantry Rifle Company and Battalion S3. In 1968-1969 he served as an
advisor to the 43rd Regiment, 18th ARVN Division in Vietnam. He
completed his four years on active duty with the
Infantry
School at Fort Benning, GA.
General Robertson
began his career in the Army Reserve in 1970 as an instructor with the
3287th US Army Reserve School in Columbia, South Carolina. He served in
several other school positions with the 3391st and the 2070th USAR
Schools and the 97th ARCOM. He joined the 108th Division as the Division
Engineer in 1984. Since then he has held several positions of
responsibility to include Battalion Commander, Logistics Group
Commander, Brigade Commander and Assistant Division Commander for
support. He was named Assistant Division Commander for operations in
March of 1995 and became the Commanding General in March 1999. He
completed his tenure in March 2003 and retired in January 2004.
He is a highly
decorated soldier, having earned the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze
Star, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Medal,
Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Reserve
Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam
Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas
Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal, Republic of
Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman
Badge, and the Basic Parachutist Badge.
Before retiring in
January 2006, General Robertson was the Director of the Highway Safety
Research Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. He is a
Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and a past president
of its North Carolina Section. He is a registered professional engineer
in Virginia and North Carolina.
